Arabia Art Department Society
The Arabia Art Department was founded in 1932. Kurt Ekholm, art director of Arabia at the time, was motivated by the idea that the ceramic culture in Finland needed developing and that should be the duty of Arabia. The Arabia Art Department is a unique place based on the visionary idea of interaction between unrestricted art and design. During its long and rich history, several ceramic artists have worked at the Arabia Art Department, including Toini Muona, Michael Schilkin, Kyllikki Salmenhaara, Birger Kaipiainen and Rut Bryk.
The Art Department Society was founded by the artists working at the Arabia Art Department in 2003. The purpose of the society is to maintain and foster the cultural heritage of the Art Department. The society focuses on maintaining the cultural heritage represented by the Arabia Art Department since its founding and promoting the status of ceramic art in the current field of culture. Historically, the artists of the Art Department have had an important role in the design and development of Arabia’s product range. Members of the Art Department Society include the department’s current artists: Fujiwo Ishimoto, Heljä Liukko-Sundström, Heikki Orvola, Pekka Paikkari, Heini Riitahuhta, Kristina Riska, Kim Simonsson, Kati Tuominen-Niittylä and Jasmin Anoschkin.
